Cancer
Is A Universal Language
FCRE Breaks Localization Barrier
June
26, 2006, Charlottesville: The Foundation for Cancer & Education,
best known for its life-saving outreach programs and educational
patient conferences, is proud to announce its foray into the bilingual
arena by providing it’s internationally-recognized Tell One Friend
plan in Spanish for the first time.
The Tell One Friend Campaign focuses on providing dietary and
lifestyle recommendations for men with prostate cancer and those
looking to prevent it. The growing body of literature shows how
much of an impact diet has on prostate cancer risk and proliferation.
However, the crux the campaign focuses on grassroots support to
spread the message by passing on an informational card or by simple
word of mouth.
"It’s
something everyone can do tomorrow to both prevent and stall prostate
cancer," says Foundation President, oncologist, and prostate cancer
survivor, Dr Charles "Snuffy" Myers. "By asking someone to just
tell one other person, we are providing a simple yet effective
means for this news to travel. We rely on patients, families,
and friends to take care of each other by bringing this information
to all of the people in their lives. In the media saturated world,
who better to deliver our message than a trusted family member
or friend?" For more information on the Tell One Friend Campaign
call or go to www.cancer-foundation.org.
Alarmed
at the lack of information available for the Hispanic community,
the FCRE knew that they needed to make a difference. "At our conference
last year, the Spanish press in the DC area made us aware of how
poor a job we were doing getting the word out to this community,"
Myers says. "In fact, the reporter who covered our event hadn’t
even heard of a PSA test which really opened our eyes."
Bent
on making its message available to as many people as possible,
the FCRE’s globalization efforts are just a beginning for this
burgeoning non-profit that has been operating since 2001. "We
are looking into translating our entire body of educational materials
to first benefit the Hispanic community and then who knows."
Spanish
is the fourth most-spoken language in the world, right behind
English, the first being Mandarin Chinese. By providing the Hispanic
community with information they can use tomorrow, FCRE hopes to
give them their own voice in the ongoing struggle against cancer‹in
effect‹making them active participants on their own healthcare
teams.
