Prostate Health Forum:
Virginia Doctors Care

August 27, 2004, Earlysville, VA: The Foundation For Cancer Research and Education (FCRE) is proud to announce that renowned prostate oncologist and prostate cancer survivor, Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers will participate in the Prostate Health Forum at Westminster at Lake Ridge, 12191 Clipper Drive, Lake Ridge, VA. The meeting, co-s ponsored by the Us Too! Chapter, Potomac Hospital Community Education, and Westminster at Lake Ridge, will be held on September 25, 2004 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, and promises to be a succinct and informative primer for anyone facing a prostate cancer diagnosis. Made possible by the American Cancer Society, ICUS Pharmaceuticals, Eli Lilly, Pfizer Upjohn, Prostate Cancer Research Institute, and FCRE, the Prostate Health Forum is a well-rounded program specifically geared to inform the public about the options available to today's educated prostate cancer patient.

The program consists of four speakers, all of whom are eager to share their expertise on topics, such as new research and new screening tests; diagnosis and treatment; and treating osteoporosis after hormonal therapy. Dr Myers plans to round off the discussion with an in depth analysis of diet and prostate cancer, one of the most important topics in the field today.

"It's important to let men know the dangers of things like flaxseed oil and animal fat," Myers says. "But I also want to let them know there are things they can eat, like fish, that can have a dramatic impact on slowing prostate cancer growth. 'You are what you eat' couldn't be more true for prostate cancer patients today."

Other experts include Dr. David Bostwick; Dr. William Reha, Urologist; and Dr. Ali Safa, Endocrinologist.

"The first step toward finding the right treatment is knowing what's out there," says Bostwick. "It's my pleasure to join this program of esteemed professionals. The collective knowledge at this event will benefit both patients and health professionals alike."

Designed to meet the needs of the newly diagnosed and the weathered veteran, the Prostate Health Forum at Westminster, offers essential information on one of the most common cancers facing men in this country. According to the American Cancer Society there will be about 230,900 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in the year 2004. About 29,900 men will die of this disease . The program is free and open to the public, but due to limited seating, registration is required. To register, patients should call 703-221-2500.

"Patients need to know their options. So many men are rushed into radiation or surgery while still ignorant of how diet and hormonal therapy can have a profound influence on their treatment," Myers adds. "I always say that education is the key to survival, and the concepts patients learn at this forum may wind up saving their lives."

FCRE is dedicated to educating prostate cancer patients with the most current information possible. Founded by medical oncologist, nutrition expert, and prostate cancer survivor Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers, FCRE is engaged in several outreach and conference programs that bring Dr. Myers' years of experience to the general public. An experienced scientist, Myers was a key player in creating AZT, Suramin, and Phenylacetate while working at the National Institute of Health. Myers has published his research in over 250 reputable periodicals. He is also the Editor-In-Chief of Prostate Forum (www.prostateforum.com.), the periodical that both patients and health professionals regard as the best of its kind. Formerly the Director of the Cancer Center at the University of Virginia, he has created FCRE to educate patients and to dispel the myth that a cancer diagnosis is a death sentence. In fact, FCRE (www.cancer-foundation.org) was set up to educate patients with the essential health information that has saved his own life.
