Area Men Unite For Health Education
Men's Health Fair, Charlottesville: August 6, 2005
Charlottesville,
VA-July 23, 2005: The Foundation for Cancer Research & Education
(FCRE) is proud to announce the first annual Men's Health Fair,
Charlottesville on Saturday, August 6, 2005 from 8:30 am to 12:30
pm at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center, Charlottesville
High School. Click for PDF flier
The
Men's Health Fair is focused on equipping Charlottesville community
men and their loved ones with the educational tools they need
to improve their overall health in the context of disease treatment
and prevention. With comprehensive lectures on heart disease,
diabetes mellitus, prostate cancer, urology, depression, and obesity,
the Men's Health Fair, Charlottesville promises to build a solid
foundation for men and their families to learn about the health
issues caused by today's sedentary, fast food culture that seems
to encourage all of the wrong lifestyle choices.
Guided
by world-renown oncologist, nutrition expert, and prostate cancer
survivor, Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers, the Men's Health
Fair, Charlottesville promises to provide the community and surrounding
regions with comprehensive, cutting edge health information in
a format that is accessible to the layman.
To
that end FCRE, has set up a well-rounded program that includes
lectures and a follow up Q&A panel discussion with some of
the area's most prominent health experts. Other physicians include:
Dr. Fraizer Fortenberry, Urology; Dr. Joseph Aloi, Endocrinology;
Dr. Robert Brown, Psychiatry; and Dr. Joshua Fischer, Cardiology.
"We
want to give men information they can use tomorrow," says
Myers, also the founder of FCRE and Director of the American Institute
for Diseases of the Prostate. "The truth is that all of these
things are linked. In my practice, I see men whose choices have
not only led them to a prostate cancer diagnosis but to a whole
slew of potentially life-threatening health problems. The good
news is that a few simple lifestyle changes now can make a huge
impact on both prolonging a man's lifespan and improving his quality
of life. The bad news is that too many men remain unaware of the
health options available to them."
Part
of FCRE's philosophy is the notion that it's time to abandon the
patchwork medicine so frequently practiced by today's health professionals
and to start treating patients comprehensively, which means giving
them the tools to not only treat a disease like prostate cancer
but to create a health gestalt that fights diabetes and heart
disease at the same time.
"By
and large, it's time for the medical industry to start treating
the entire patient not just his body parts," says Myers.
The
program is free to the public and includes a complimentary breakfast.
While there is no cost for the program, registration is still
required. For more information or to register call 800-305-2432.
FCRE reserves the right to cancel should numbers not be achieved.
This event is made possible by FCRE with special assistance from
GlaxoSmithKline and the American Cancer Society.
"We
want to encourage the entire family to get involved," says
Dr. Myers. "What affects one man affects his entire family.
We need to teach every member of the family unit how to preserve
each part of that unit, because when it comes to their health,
men are especially difficult. It's time the entire family knows
that the 'John Wayne' mentality is a thing of the past. In the
guise of being macho, too many men wind up neglecting their health
until its too late. It is a fact that early detection of any disease
can greatly increase the chances of survival. Educating men is
the first step toward this goal, as the educated man has the best
chance of beating the odds of any terminal prognosis. That's the
point of the meeting. We want to help men make a difference in
their lives when it really counts."
