Prostate Cancer Awareness
Area Survivor Spreads Life-Saving Mission

Charlottesville, VA-November 7, 2005: In an attempt to spread the same life-saving information that put his own cancer into remission, local prostate cancer survivor and world renowned prostate oncologist, Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers will be giving a lecture on new and promising prostate cancer treatments on Saturday morning, November 19th at the Potomac Room, Westminster at Lake Ridge Continuing Care Community from 9:30 to Noon.

To promote learning and empowerment Myers speaks all over the world to act as living proof that a prostate cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence. In fact, this February, Myers will celebrate seven years of cancer-free living since his diagnoses in 1999. Along with an aggressive treatment of radiation and hormonal therapies, he has made drastic diet and lifestyle changes that have had an equally important impact on rendering his cancer inert and PSA (Prostate Specific Androgen) undetectable.

"When I went to the so-called experts, they told me my days were numbered. It’s no wonder so many Americans distrust the medical industry. I refused to accept that premise, and once I found out what it was like to be a patient, I made it my business to create treatment plans in my own clinic that considered each individual’s needs as people, not subjects."

The Symposium at Westminster at Lake Ridge is free and made possible by the Foundation for Cancer Research & Education (FCRE), the UsToo! chapter at Westminster at Lake Ridge, and Potomac Hospital. The symposium will be held at 12191 Clipper Drive, Lake Ridge/Woodbridge, VA 22192. A free continental breakfast is included. For more information call 703-496-3400.

Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men. Recent statistics from the American Cancer Society estimate that there will be approximately 232,090 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2005 and that 30,350 men will die of this disease-that's one death every 17.5 minutes. While prostate cancer is highly treatable, there is still no cure and many men remain unaware of the treatment options available to them.

"Patients need to know their options," Myers says. "So many men are rushed into radiation or surgery while still ignorant of how diet and hormonal therapy can have a profound influence on their treatment," Myers adds. "I always say that education is the key to survival, and the concepts patients learn at this forum may wind up saving their lives."
